It's Cold Outside!

The beauty of travel photography is that you can tailor it to what you like to do and where you want to go. For reasons that still escape us, we Olders have developed a preference for high adventure in winter. That often means cold fingers and frozen camera batteries.

The cheapest way to keep fingers warm and still be able to operate your camera is to wear Army-Navy surplus woolen gloves with the fingertips cut off. Warmer but more expensive are thin Gore-tex gloves inside another pair of gloves or mittens. Warmest of all are disposable hand warmers inside your mittens. Hand warmers are also good for keeping batteries from freezing in your pocket, or preventing frozen lens shutters while you are waiting for your models to arrive (you put the hand warmer inside a plastic bag along with your camera, and close up the bag with scotch tape or a rubber band).

And whatever you wear or don't wear on your hands, always wear a hat on your head in cold weather. Your whole body will stay significantly warmer.
