SUBMIT A VARIETY

Make your photo editor's job easy by giving her lots of images to choose from (images keyed to the particular story, that is; not images in general).

Not only should you submit a generous number of photos to cover your story, you should submit a wide variety. When you're shooting, remember to include both horizontals to verticals. Leave space around the top and sides to allow for a variety of layouts and logos. Although this may cause an imbalance to the composition of your picture, the photo editor will love it because she can use this "dead space" for headlines, sub-heads and other typography.

Shoot varying amounts of water, sky and land for the same subject. To vary the mood and lighting, shoot the same subject at different times of the day, and at different aperature openings.

Why make the editor's job easy? So she'll turn to you first the next time she needs images.
