Top Company Names in the Stock Photo Industry

How do they rank webtraffic-wise? And how does Photosource International stack up in comparison?
In the stock photography world, there are several "large revenue" companies. Their direct involvement with stock photography ranges from total focus, -- to stock being one segment of their operations. While PhotoSource International doesn't match revenues with these companies, we find it significant that our website is ranked near the top as documented by the rankings system of Alexa. com. The following are listed from first ranked to last, as of March 2004.

"Moral Rights" May Protect Photographers In Limited Circumstances
``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
By Stephen Filler Esq.
Although the United States does not generally recognize "moral rights" in legal issues, in some situations "moral rights" will give photographers added protection.
Copyright includes the right to use, reproduce, display, and copy a photograph. If and when the copyright is transferred or assigned, however, a photographer cannot generally control whether he or she will receive credit for the photo, or whether the work may be changed -- unless the recipient so agrees.
The situation is different in countries like France, that recognize moral rights. Known in French as "droit moral," moral rights give artists the perpetual and non-assignable right to be credited as the creator of the work (the "right of attribution or paternity") and the right to prevent degradation of the work (the "right of integrity"). French moral rights also include the right to determine when a work will be released to the public (the "right of disclosure") and, with certain conditions, the right to recall the work from the public (the "right of withdrawal"). In a famous example in 1995, the heirs of director John Huston prevented a French broadcast of a colorized version of "The Asphalt Jungle" because such colorization violated Huston’s "right of integrity" in the movie.
Easy PICTURE Research
````````````````````````````````
It's rapidly becoming apparent to photo researchers that the easiest way to find a particular image is to use the Web, and not by sifting through actual images on the Web, but to search for a word or words describing the image. Very often the searched-for image is something specific, like an isolated cafe in Chicago, a museum for model railroad cars in Pittsburgh, or a mountain wildflower in Wyoming. Major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Alta Vista, HotBot, Lycos, Infoseek, etc., constantly use their webcrawlers to capture such words (text) that identify images on the Web.
Photographers are becoming more aware that researchers need web-posted photos to be accompanied by a variety of descriptors and references, including words referring to the mood or emotional state invoked by a photo. Some photographers with access to specific subject areas post descriptors of photos they can quickly obtain, making them available for assignment by photobuyers. For example, a micro-biologist who is also a freelance stock photographer might post several hundred descriptive words on his website, knowing that although he might not have those specific photos in his files, he has access to be able to take the photo(s) at a moment's notice.
Photo researchers increasingly are by-passing the time-consuming task of looking at images. Instead, they let a search engine do their work for them, by narrowing down sources of the needed images by checking text photo listing descriptions put on the Web by stock photographers. Once the researcher locates a photographer who has images of the subject area they need, they contact the photographer, and then start looking through a selection of targeted photos.
Searching through dozens of images to find a needed photo can be exhausting and boggle the eyes. In contrast, searching by keyword (the process highlights relevant words and descriptions), shortens search time and pinpoints exact sources of the photos needed.-RE

Wireless Internet On The Road
If you're traveling with your Wi-Fi-capable laptop and want to wirelessly connect to the Internet while on the road, there's good news. The number of "hotspots" continues to grow, and they're not all in Starbucks coffee shops. According to one industry report, there were only a few hundred hotspots worldwide at the turn of the century (21st, that is). Now, we're up to 40,000! If you know the ZIP code of the city you're visiting, go to http://intel.jiwire.com/ (Intel, of course, emphasizes Centrino wireless technology) and enter the ZIP code. You'll get a list of hotspots within your selected mileage radius (the program probably uses city hall or a similar base point for the particular ZIP code when calculating the line-of-sight radius vector). There are other options, too, like selecting a desired service provider (Boingo or T-Mobile, for example). Also included are the fees, which can run as high as ten bucks a day. For free hotspots, check out www.WifiFreeSpot.com. This site also has links to The Wireless Librarian, which lists libraries that provide free wireless connectivity.
Quick Facts: According to the Intel site, New York City has the most wireless locations, with 766 (next is San Francisco with 458). And no surprise here, the US has the most overall at 12,772, with the United Kingdom second at 3,649. And in case you're wondering, there are 80 hotspots in Wisconsin.
Search Features
You may not have noticed, but Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/photosourcefolio) has a nifty search feature whereby you can search selected (they do the selecting--it's a copyright issue) books by their content. So, typing in a search word or phrase will yield a list of books that contain that word or phrase within the text of the entire book. It can be very handy if you remember reading something in a book, but can't remember the name of the book. Amazon does not index the content of all the books they sell, however. They can only index the ones where the copyright holder has given permission, which at last count was over 190 publishers (and publishers publish many books, so the book count should be much higher).

RAF photo file fuels row over AUSCHWITZ.
Documents reveal RAF turned down plea to attack death camps in 1944
Jewish leaders have condemned Britain for its 'shameful' failure to save
Holocaust victims after previously unseen reconnaissance photographs
revealed the RAF was monitoring Nazi death camps in wartime.
'This proves beyond doubt that Britain and the Allies knew about the
killings long before the end of the war, but chose to do nothing,' said the
World Jewish Congress in New York yesterday. The pictures were taken by the
RAF over concentration camps in 1944.
