Get an email address and keep it

How To Let Your Clients Know Where To Find You On The Internet

Advance Notes: Choosing and keeping an email address is an important consideration. Be sure to choose one that’s easy to remember, to write, and to pronounce.

It might seem that an email address can be a lifesaver for the independent photo researcher, but there are a couple drawbacks here if you’re not careful: From time to time we are tempted by local and national ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to hook up with their email services. They dangle an alluring low fee, much as credit card companies will do, to bring you aboard. Then, be it six months or twelve months later, they’re sure to raise their fees. Your problem: Should you switch to a cheaper company or stay with your original ISP?

Secondly, finding a stable ISP company takes some research on your part –you don't want to choose one that may be vulnerable to going out of business. (Ever hear of Genie, Prodigy, or CompuServe?) If you switch ISP's either because of price or because your ISP company folds, it means that you'll have to contact every place you've registered your email address and change it to your new address. This includes all your printed matter, such as your business cards, flyers, stationery, invoices, plus your Web addresses and links where you have registered your name and website.

Finally, when you select your email address make is easy on yourself by choosing an address that reads well and is easy to say over the phone or in a radio or television interview.

LESSON: When choosing an Internet Service Provider, pick one with a track record.

That indicates there’s a good chance they’ll be around for the next decade. We’ve all heard examples of low-fee start-up ISPs that are out of business in a few months.

PERMANENCY

Instead, choose an ISP that looks like a good bet to be around for a long time (even though the cost may be somewhat higher). In the long run, you’ll be happy you did.

You may want to sign up for private email in addition to your regular business email. A second email (sometimes called Webmail) can be used much as you would use a “non-published” telephone number. There are several dozen companies that will offer you a free email. Keep in mind however, that many of these free email sites receive their profits from advertising. You can expect commercial intrusion to ride along with your messages.

To find free email services, go to www.emailaddresses.com or use one of the

search engines such as Google. Here’s a sampling of what you will find:

Yahoo! http:/ /mail.yahoo.com

Juno http://www.juno.com

HotMail (MSN) http://www.hotmail.com

EasyPost http://www.easypost.com

And finally, don’t forget Google’s Gmail. Many companies, large and small, will assign a secondary Gmail address to each of their employees to use on special occasions and unique situations. The Gmail service is free.

PEOPLE FIND

Should you list your name and email address on a “people search”? If you are a recluse, a hermit, an artist who doesn’t want to be hounded by the press or be bothered by relatives, no, don’t submit your name and email to a People Search feature at your favorite Search Engine. On the other hand, if you want to receive attention from other business entities that are a part of the stock photo industry, the answer is, yes.

Sure, it’s true: you might open yourself to receiving what most of us call “junk mail” (spam). But think of it this way. You can recognize the difference between the subject matter of a junk mail pitchman and a response from a client. (“It just rings differently.”) So the choice comes down to whether to put up with receiving 24 junk mail letters that take twenty four seconds to delete, for the chance to receive one email from a client that might lead to a lifetime business relationship. No contest.

Feds Say We Should Receive Less Spam

Do you believe? The government says computer users may see a decline in the amount of SPAM they receive. Robert Alan Soloway is accused of using networks of compromised Azombie@ computers to send out millions upon millions of spam e‑mails. He has been indicted by a federal grand jury with 35 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud, e‑mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering. A Microsoft lawyer says that Soloway is one of the top ten spammers in the world. This is the same guy that Microsoft won a $7 million judgment against in 2005, and an ISP in Oklahoma won a $10 million judgment. Who knows how it will all play out in the courts (he's naturally pleaded not guilty), but at least it's a start.

Your Car As A Power Plant

While there has been discussion about future all-electric vehicles (not hybrids, real battery electric vehicles) someday providing power from their batteries back to the electric grid during peak grid usage, we're talking here about all those electronic gadgets you plug into your vehicle's power port (aka cigarette lighter). Some cars come with multiple power ports. Problem is, they all provide 12vdc. That's fine if you have the appropriate car adapter for your electronic equipment. But there are alternatives. It's called an inverter, and it inverts the 12vdc from your car to 110-120vac to power small appliances (including those pieces of gear that don't have a car adapter). Yes, they are somewhat limited in power (since they cannot exceed the rating of the car's power port), ranging up to about 175 watts, but can be very useful. One device hangs on the headrest, allowing those in the rear seats to plug in. It's called the Headrest Powerworks (by Coleman, the camping folks) and provides up to 225 watts. You can see it at getorganized.com (http://www.shopgetorganized.com/prodetail~itemNo~26883b.asp). Another is from Xantrex, which comes in many flavors and power ratings. Look for it on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect‑home/photosourcefolio) But remember, in most cases you'll need to keep your car's engine running or risk discharging (and possibly damaging) your car's starting battery.

Can Photographers Take Pictures Of People In Public ?

“I’d like to take human interest pictures – people interacting, working, doing the usual things of daily life. But I’ve read you need a model release if you expect to get your pictures published…”

I’ve often heard this from would-be editorial photographers.

It’s faulty information. In fact, it’s plain wrong.

Photographers can photograph in public, and if the picture is used for an editorial purpose (to inform or educate the public) it will not require a model release.

“Well, then, how did this myth about ‘model releases required’ come about?” You ask.

Here's a video that Rohn provided on the subject for photographers. http://www.photosource.

What is a Light Box?

A convenient method for photographers to upload several low-res pictures, and usually 5 or 6.

These show up as thumbnails.

To view them in larger format, click on the image.

These images are for viewing, but rarely used for publication. (Their resolution does not qualify for general publication.)

If you want the high-res (or a transparency) of the selected image in the Light Box, contact the photographer directly.

 Copyright

That “c” with a circle around it, ©, is the familiar copyright notice. On a photo, it alerts readers, and would-be infringers, that the photo is under U.S. Copyright Law protection.

Does this symbol need to be displayed on all your photos for you to be protected? In other words, if someone uses a photo without the permission of the photographer, but the photo does not contain a copyright notice, is that person still guilty of infringing?

The answer is yes. Someone who uses a photo they see in a publication, without getting the photographer’s permission (let alone paying him or her), is violating copyright, whether or not there’s a copyright notice on the photo. Under current law, photos are protected by copyright whether or not the photographer puts a copyright notice on them. However, the fact that a photo does not have a copyright notice on it may result in a lower damages award, under copyright law’s "innocent infringer" defense.
