HAPPY BIRTHDAY To Us!
Oct. marked our 28th year as publishers of market information for photographers and photobuyers. In 1976 we established the PhotoLetter marketletter. In 1983 we pioneered going on-line with e-mail delivery of the PhotoLetter (using NewsNet) to better serve our subscribers. In 1984 and 1985 we launched the PhotoMarket and PhotoDaily marketletters; in 1988 we began fax delivery; in 1993 we created the PhotoStockNotes monthly informational newsletter. Five years ago we established our website (www.photosource.com), now the most extensive and comprehensive site on the Internet for stock photographers, receiving more hits per day (15,000 - 20,000) than all other stock photo sites COMBINED. In 1998 we established computer to computer (C2C) delivery of our marketletters, plus instituted the PhotoSourceBANK and PhotoSourceFOLIO, which provide photographers with their own web pages as a valuable marketing channel. In 2000 we launched the e-mail-delivered PhotoAIM newsletter for photographers, and PhotoResearcher Newsletter for photobuyers. In 2000, also, we developed PhotoSourceBOOK, an annual photographer directory for photobuyers. Today we reach photographer-subscribers and photobuyers all across the country and around the globe. Here's to more great things to come. -RE

A Marriage of Phone and Camera
```````````````````````````````
The photokina exhibition last fall in Germany indicated that we are now experiencing a new stage in the Internet/Camera/Phone phenomenon. Both Nokia and Microsoft were present in full regalia at a photo show - the biggest in the world. It was Microsoft's and Nokia's first-ever photokina exhibit. Both convincingly presented that cameras and phones are merging. All of this for the benefit of the independent stock photographer.
The cell phone with a camera is becoming a camera with a cell phone.
Still cameras now shoot videos.
Video cameras now shoot stills.
Photographers can now print an image directly from the camera chip. And, these prints have a 100-year durability.
All of these technological innovations point to improvements in photographer and photobuyer relations and operating procedures in the stock photograpphy industry. -RE
How do they rank webtraffic-wise? And how does PhotoSource International stack up in comparison?
Traffic Ratings
In the stock photography world, there are several "large revenue" companies. Their direct involvement with stock photography ranges from total focus, -- to stock being one segment of their operations. While PhotoSource International doesn't match revenues with these companies, we find it significant that our website is ranked near the top as documented by the rankings system of Alexa. com.
On-Line Photo Management Software - Which to Buy?
``````````````````````````````````````````````````
Photo sharing, --the ability to manage your stock photography, catalog it, exhibit it, present it, is an up-and-coming area that will be important for the stock photo industry to explore. But before purchasing any photo-sharing software, do your homework and learn just which software choice is best for you.
Dave Young is Director of Sales and Marketing at 3cim, Inc., a Web-imaging technology company that produces such a software product (SlideTour). We asked him for some insights on this growing area of photo sharing technology.
PSI: For the average stock photographer who doesn't care to (or can't afford to) build a website, what are the alternatives.?
DY: The good news is that there are lots of choices. The bad news is that an option suited best for a professional stock photographer, is difficult to spot among the several offerings out there that are targeted to the general consumer, the amateur or casual photographer.
PSI: Meaning?
DY: Many products might be suitable for family-friends-neighbors photo sharing, but fall short if you are trying to work with a professional photobuyer.
It's important to be able to readily identify a professional-grade product when you see one. When you locate such a professional tool, my advice is to put it on your short list, because the chances are that it will serve your needs far better than a product targeted to the general public.
PSI: What clues should the professional stock photographer look for?
DY: Here are a couple keywords to look for: If the promotion talks about "picture sharing," it's probably a general-consumer product. Look for the words, "presentation services," if you're a professional.
PSI: Why?
DY: Stock photographers should be seeking "industrial strength" products, not those aimed for "household use." Commercial software product makers aim their marketing language based on the audience it plans to appeal to. This usually breaks down to either professional or consumer-based. This should be an indicator to you of who that audience is. You'll hear or see the word "sharing" in the marketing of consumer products, because sharing is what the majority of the non-professional public wants to do with their pictures. Meanwhile, business-oriented services will most likely use the term "presentation services" or something similar. They will provide more professional-looking portfolio templates and interfaces. Many professional products are also e-commerce enabled, meaning that your portfolio actually becomes a storefront for the sale of high-resolution image files, if you choose.
----------------------
A comparison of seven photo management software companies can be found at
www.photosource.com/software.html
----------------------
PSI: Are there other clues to be aware of?
DY: Yes. Another indicator is the attention given to print-ready images. While the Internet is a wonderful way to view, sort, search, distribute, or manage large numbers of images quickly, it is an inferior way to present high-quality pictures. The consumer product will usually only offer snapshot print services. A business product will accommodate the storage, transfer, and sometimes offer the printing, of high-resolution images.

The three-month pilot program that allowed you to order real U.S. postage with an image you uploaded to stamps.com has been terminated early by the Post Office. The Post Office is now re-evaluating the program. If you want to express your opinion about it, please write to the following address. The Post Office will be accepting public comment for about 90 days.

Any postage already printed under the PhotoStamps program remains valid U.S. postage. Stamps.com printed about 2 million individual stamps during the 7-week trial period. If you were unaware of this program, see the Sept. issue of PSN.
Adobe Digital Photo Format
Adobe, the folks that brought us the .PDF file format to allow sharing of documents in their original layout and format, and the ubiquitous PhotoShop photo editing software, is proposing a similar standard for digital images. This new specification is designed to make saving of files and editing of images compatible across all types of cameras and photo software (assuming camera manufacturers and software developers adopt the specification). Most consumer digital cameras capture an image in the .jpg format, which is a glossy compression algorithm. Some of those cameras and most high-end and professional cameras also offer a "raw" format, which is supposed to capture the image before any processing occurs by the camera's electronics. One problem is that different manufacturers use different, proprietary versions of the raw format. Adobe is proposing an industry standard for the raw format, calling it Digital Negative specification, or DNG. While there is no requirement that camera manufacturers support this new spec, some industry folks predict it will happen within 5 years, since "it is to everyone's advantage." Adobe is making the spec available for free.
Here a Patch, There a Patch, Everywhere a Patch Patch
We've always counseled our readers on the importance of keeping their operating system patched with the latest fixes and updates (this applies mostly to computers running the Microsoft operating system). Same applies to antivirus and firewall software. Well, one of the latest threats affects Microsoft Office. Did we mention that, while there are automatic updates for Windows operating system files (for versions of Windows after 95), no such auto update exists for Microsoft Office? It's true. To get your Office updates, you have to navigate to an Office Update website, and manually launch the update scanner. Further, if there are any updates, you generally need to have your original Office CDs ready to pop into the computer when requested or the update won't install. One way to get there is to click on the Office Update tab from the main Windows update page. One of the latest Critical Updates just happens to affect Microsoft Office. Problem is, this particular bug may also exist in other, non-Microsoft products that use Microsoft code! And the Office Update scanner does not identify non-Microsoft products. This particular bug is of great concern to photographers because it exploits a flaw in the way digital image files are processed. The bug could allow attackers to take control of a computer running Windows XP. So, if you're running Windows XP and have Microsoft Office installed, visit the Office Update site as soon as you can. The Office Update scanner only works for Office 2000 and above. However, there are downloads for earlier Office products; it's just not nearly as automated.
