The Largest Stock Photo Agency in the World
Who is the Biggest?

Advance Notes: Ever wondered who is the largest stock photo agency in the world? The answer might surprise you.

Who are the members of the largest stock photo agency in the world? As you well know, photo researchers and buyers seeking hard-to-locate pictures no longer rely on the antiquated methods of the last century to find photos; methods still used today by classic stock photo agencies. You know which ones: Getty, Corbis, Jupiter et al. No, they are not the largest stock agencies in the world. They represent only a small fraction of the stock photos that reside in the worldwide databases of photographers. And search engines are now leaving the outdated systems of these agencies in the dust.

The largest stock agency, is the Internet + Search Engines + The Independent Photographer. Increasing numbers of photobuyers are finding out they can easily locate the source of the exact photo they need by simply using a search engine such as Google, and typing in one or more words describing the photo they need. * If they also add a space and then the word ‘photosource’, they will come to a website on the PhotoSourceBANK, a database where hundreds of photographers have each used 3,000 keywords and phrases to closely describe their available photos. > www.photosource.com/bank <.

How large is this directory of photographs? You be the judge. Figure out how many individual photographers now have digitized their collections and presently make them available to photobuyers via the Internet. If your calculations are similar to mine, you’ll estimate there are presently at least 450 million images search/available on the Internet. By the year 2010 there will be three times that number. Getty and Corbis will never catch up.

*Have you tried using Google Images as a source for images? Caution. This system directs the viewer to sub par images that also often present complicated copyright issues. More and more buyers are turning to the “text” option of the Google search bar, and they type in their photo need description plus ‘photosource,’ to locate quality stock photos coupled with ease of transaction.

Rohn Engh, veteran stock photographer and publisher of “PhotoRESEARCHER Newsletter,” has provided on-line targeted information for photobuyers, photo researchers and editors for two decades. No other newsletter brings photobuyers such up-to-the minute, practical intimately familiar with both sides of the stock photo desk. For more info: http://www.photosource.com/photobuyer/.

Do You Manage Yourself Wisely?

Advance Notes: "Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday." -Don Marquis. Here are some management tips that will help you avoid the dreaded "procrastination."

Photo Research is a business, and by applying the same management techniques that are used by successful businesses, you can master the monster. Here are some self-management principles for the small-business entrepreneur:

GET IT DONE. It’s easy to slip into the habit of narcotizing yourself with the evening news or a sitcom. Change your habits. Buy a $5.95 quartz alarm to beep the same time every evening to remind you, and others in your household that it’s “Photo Marketing Time.” (By the way, I haven’t watched a TV news program since 2001. I rely on weekly news magazines for my information on current issues.)

SPECIALIZE. Creative people often do themselves in because they are interested in many areas. Choose a select few of your high interest areas and specialize. You’ll become known as a valuable resource to specific photobuyers in these areas.

ASK AROUND. Don’t reinvent the wheel. There’s a goldmine of information waiting for you out there to tap, for example on PhotoSource International’s bulletin board, The Kracker Barrel. Or, with the entrepreneur next door who’s already been there. He knows the pitfalls and the obstacles, especially if he’s failed. Everyone loves to be an expert. Weigh his opinions against others, and then come to a consensus. If you don’t want to consult a local competitor, phone someone in another similar-sized city that is travelling the same highway.

ELIMINATE THE LOSERS. Take time to analyze what’s working for you and what’s not. Parts of your business are moneymakers, others are not. Don’t let sentiment or the tired phrase, “We’ve always done it this way,” drag you down.

LOOK LIKE A PRO. A “better mousetrap” will not insure your product’s success. Employ delivery techniques of the 21st century. You don’t get a second chance at a first impression. If you want first class treatment from your clients, give them first class treatment. Invest in deluxe stationary, labels, and (white) mailing cartons. Get into the digital era.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Jumping in with two feet and enthusiasm is fun and romantic, but unless you’ve checked to see if water is in the pool, you’re in for some disappointments. If your enthusiasm is still high after you’ve done your research, you’ve got a winner.

Want to Invite Google to Index your Web Page?

The search engine, Google, adds and updates new sites to its index each time it “crawls” the Web. Google invites you to submit your Web page’s URL. They don’t add all submitted URLs to their index, and they cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when your website will be indexed. But it’s worth giving it a try. To add your website:

Let Google find your stock photos for you.

Scanning through dozens of off-target images can be time-consuming and eye-wearying, not to mention frustrating.

A better way

In the Google search bar, type a phrase or several words that best describes the picture you’re looking for. Then type a space and then the word photosource. And click.

You’ll arrive at the PhotoSourceBANK. Your selection will appear (in text) on a page with the name and contact info of a photographer whose files include coverage of the subject matter you request. Contact the photographer to receive a lightbox selection of target images for you to review for consideration. Or, if the photographer is also a member of PhotoSourceGROUP, an icon will appear, that when you click on it will take you to an immediate view of the target photo or photos, ready for downloading.
