The DOT.COM down spin was no doubt precipitated by one of its own inventions: the spreadsheet. It was so easy for a spreadsheet to paint a rosy dot.com landscape and project millions of dollars in profits for venture capitalists by the turn of the century. When profits didn't come last year, the paper millionaires found the cash registers were dry when they asked for more "seed" money from the investment bankers. In last month's PhotoStockNotes we list several dozen photo-oriented dot.coms. (See: "Who's Listening?") It'll be interesting to see, next year at this time, which ones have survived the economic downturn. GOOD NEWS for individual stock photographers: During recessionary times, photobuyers have a tendency to go straight to the image-owner (you!) rather than pay a middle-man fee.-RE
