Defenses to Copyright Infringement

Copyright H. T. WhiteSince copyright is a limited monopoly, not all unauthorized uses of a copyrighted work constitute infringement. Some of the exceptions fall under a doctrine called "fair use," and include usage for newsworthy or educational purposes, and other uses, which attempt to balance the right to free speech and the need in a democratic society to disseminate information to the public, with the copyrights owner's right to control the use of the copyrighted work.
