THE INTERNET OVERSEER

Q. What is ICANN?

A. ICANN is a new global nonprofit corporation created to oversee the Internet's core technical management functions, including Internet Protocol access space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management. ICANN is currently accrediting new domain name registrars (Network Solutions, Inc. is no longer the sole registrar in for "com," "org," and "net" domain names). ICANN is also working on new domain name dispute resolution rules which will determine who wins when two people or companies want the same domain name. For more information on ICANN, visit its Web site, http://www.icann.org.
