Public Domain Photos

Where can I find public domain photos on the Internet?

            Q. Someone mentioned there is a way to find public domain pictures on the web. Ever heard of such a web site?

            A. Yes, you should probably check out Public Domain Images at www.pdimages.com. From the site you can do a variety of things, such as browse free images, look at their catalog of photographs, films, and videos, get help and images from a researcher. You can reach them at: Public Domain Image, National Press Building, Suite 2024, Washington, DC 20045, Phone 1 202 255-8063, Fax 1 202 478-0808. E-mail: scott@pdimages.com. Many public domain photos (Navy, Army, Air Force, etc.) are available to you at government sites.

For guidance on what may be in public domain and what may not be, read pamphlet number 195 at http://www.lcweb.loc.gov/rr/print/195_copr.html. You can search through some of the popular government sites to find their copyright restriction statements. Most of them are quite liberal.

Public domain film footage is available through a British company, FootageFarm Ltd. The footage is from the National U.S. Archives and the Library of Congress. Contact: Lin McConnell, Tel. +44 20 7240 7477, Web: http://www.footagefarm.co.uk
