INTERNET PRIVACY Why are Web site privacy policies getting so much attention in the press lately? Two reasons: One, people are increasingly concerned about merchants' and Web site owners' use of their personal data. Two, the European Union's new Privacy Directive restricts the transfer of personal data outside the EU except where the country of transfer ensures an adequate level of protection for data. The EU initially determined that the United States does not meet this standard. Rather than passing new laws, Congress has decided to rely on industry self-regulation. As a result, various industry organizations are encouraging members to post privacy policies on their Web sites to inform site users what uses the site owner will make of data provided by site users. |
