CONGRESS EXTENDS COPYRIGHT TERM

In October, 1998, Congress extended the duration of copyrights by 20 years when it passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act.

For a work created by an individual, the copyright now lasts for life of the author plus 70 years. The reason for this change in the law was to make U.S. law consistent with European law.
